Safari STEAM: The Secret to Engagement (and Your Sundays Back)

We’ve all been there: it’s Sunday night, and you’re deep in a Pinterest rabbit hole. You’re looking for something “Safari” that’s actually educational, but all you’re finding are crafts that require a trip to the store and an hour of prep.

It’s a cycle that leads straight to burnout. We spend hours prepping activities that our little learners finish in five minutes.

But what if Monday felt different? Imagine walking into your room with a plan that uses what’s already on your shelves—and actually keeps your kids focused for 30 minutes or more.

Give This a Go: Safari Animal Tracks

This is one of my favorite “low-prep, high-engagement” activities. It’s simple, but the scientific thinking it sparks is incredible.

• Materials: Play dough and your bin of plastic safari animals.
• The Invitation: Press an animal’s foot into the dough to create a mystery print. Ask, “Who walked here?”
• The Learning: As they match animals to prints, they are comparing shapes, observing details, and classifying—the very roots of scientific inquiry.

Why it works: It’s open-ended. There’s no “wrong” way to play, which is why children stay with this activity far longer than a worksheet. It’s not a “Pinterest promise”—it’s just how 3- to 6-year-olds are wired to learn.
