How many pumpkins can you stack before they tumble?
Pumpkins aren’t just for decorating! With a few simple classroom materials, they become an invitation for preschoolers to build, balance, measure, test, and discover.
From tiny candy pumpkins to real pumpkins balanced on block structures, these playful fall engineering challenges give children plenty of opportunities to experiment with different solutions.
The best part? There isn’t just one way to build a pumpkin tower.

Invite Play: How Can We Stack Our Pumpkins?
Start with a pumpkin-themed picture book such as Five Little Pumpkins by Dan Yaccarino.
After reading, ask:
“How could we build something that will hold our pumpkins?”
Gather a collection of pumpkins and familiar classroom building materials. Try setting up several invitations throughout the week, allowing children to explore one idea at a time.
1. Build a Bridge for Five Little Pumpkins

Use wooden blocks, craft sticks, and five orange bottle caps to represent the pumpkins.
Invite children to build a bridge or gate that can support all five.
What happens when the pumpkins are placed close together? What if they are spread across the bridge?
Children can experiment with the number and placement of supports, the length of the bridge, and how many pumpkins their structure can hold.

2. Balance a Real Pumpkin
Use a small real pumpkin with wooden blocks and craft sticks.
Challenge children to create a structure that supports the pumpkin without tipping over.
Try changing the height of the supports or the number of craft sticks across the top.
For a new challenge, introduce a larger pumpkin and see how children adapt their designs.

3. Candy Stack Pumpkins
How tall can you make a pumpkin tower?
Provide candy-shaped pumpkin manipulatives and playdough. Invite children to experiment with stacking the pumpkins and using the dough to connect or balance them.
Will a wide base help? What happens if the pumpkins lean?
Children can count each pumpkin as their tower grows and compare their different designs.
Use non-edible pumpkin manipulatives when appropriate and supervise small materials.

4. Build With Cups and Pumpkins
Paper cups offer another way to explore balance and stability.
Can children arrange the cups to support a small pumpkin?
They might stack them vertically, turn them upside down, spread them apart, or create a wider base.
Let children discover which arrangements support the pumpkin and which ones need another try.

Observe Wonder: What Happens When We Test?
As children build, watch what they notice and how they respond when a structure changes or falls.
You might ask:
- What happened when you added another pumpkin?
- Which part of your structure is helping it stay balanced?
- What could you change?
- How could we make it taller?
- How could we measure your structure?
Resist the temptation to fix a wobbly tower right away. Give children time to test their own ideas, change materials, and rebuild.
A falling pumpkin isn’t the end of the experience. It’s another opportunity to investigate.
Extend STEAM: Measure, Compare & Try Again
Once children have experimented with different pumpkin structures, invite them to compare their creations.
Which tower is tallest? Which bridge holds the most pumpkins? Does a larger pumpkin need a different kind of support?
Use snap cubes, blocks, or a measuring tape to explore height. Photograph structures before and after children redesign them.
You can also invite children to combine materials from different invitations to invent a completely new pumpkin structure.
STEAM Experience
Science: Investigate balance, gravity, weight, and stability as pumpkins are added to different structures.
Technology: Use a camera to document designs or simple measuring tools to compare results.
Engineering: Build, test, and redesign bridges, towers, and supports using different materials.
Arts: Invite children to create an imaginative pumpkin scene or arrange their structures into a class pumpkin display.
Math: Count pumpkins, measure tower heights, compare sizes, and explore more, fewer, taller, and shorter.
