Dress up your favorite Hex Bug and turn it into a Love Bug!
With a few simple supplies, you can take a favorite toy and turn it into a STEAM Activity.
STEAM represents the combination of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. Teaching children how to think creatively and learning to be problem solvers is how we can prepare our children for the future. No matter what unknown technologies, industries or careers lay ahead, creative problem solvers will be the innovators in their field.

What is a hexbug?
A Hexbug is a “Micro Robotic Creature” designed to introduce young children to beginning concepts of robotics. You can read more about them here. We were not sponsored or compensated in any way for our hexbug, we just like to play with them!

Preschool STEM Challenges:
Can you build a robotic Love Bug?
Can you design a maze for robotic love bug?
Step 1: Turn your hexbug into a love bug! Use stickers, tape and googly eyes to create and design your own motorized bug.
Don’t forget to think of a cute name to go with your love bug!
Step 2: Design a maze for your love bug.
We cut straws into different lengths and taped them down to a cookie sheet. Use also could try building a maze out of LEGO bricks.
Step 3: Test your maze. Can you love bug make it to the end of the maze?
We discovered our love bug was even able to turn around and go back to the starting point.

Activity Modification for older children: Design a maze that includes at least 3 turns within the maze.
STEAM Integrations:
Science: What are the body parts of an insect? Does your love bug have all the right body parts?
Technology: Use a timer to see how fast your love bug can make it through the maze.
Engineering: Design and build a maze for your love bug.
Art: Design your love bug.
Math: Count how many times can your love bug go through the maze continuosly without stopping or getting stuck.
