As a new school year gets going, so do a lot of new feelings. New friends, new routines, and new faces in the learning space can bring up everything from excitement to nerves, sometimes in the very same child. That makes August the perfect time to slow down and talk about something bigger than the first day jitters. Kindness is not just a nice idea to teach preschoolers. It is something they can actually feel in their bodies, and that makes it a perfect fit for hands-on STEAM.

Why Kindness Belongs in Your STEAM Time
STEAM is not only about building and testing. It is also a natural home for social-emotional learning, because science gives children real language for something they already sense but cannot always explain, which is that kindness changes how we feel, physically and emotionally. When preschoolers connect an act of kindness to a feeling in their own body, the lesson sticks in a way a worksheet never could.
This Month’s Featured Lesson
Emotion Exploration: The Science of Kindness invites children to notice how their bodies and feelings respond to acts of kindness. Paired with The Feelings Book by Todd Parr, the lesson opens with a conversation about different emotions, then moves into a story about kindness and how it might feel to be on the receiving end. Children draw their own responses to kindness on large paper, choosing colors and expressions that match how they feel. From there, the lesson gets hands-on with a simple demonstration of how our heart rate can change between feeling calm and feeling upset, giving children a real, physical way to understand why kindness makes us feel good.
Each of these lessons comes with the guiding questions, teaching strategy, and full Invite Play to Observe Wonder to Extend STEAM breakdown inside the Member Lab, so you always have the words ready when a child asks why kindness feels the way it does. Members you can log in here to download that lesson.
Simple Ways to Build Kindness Into Any Day
Beyond this lesson, kindness can show up in small moments throughout your day. A few simple habits can help you notice and celebrate it every time it happens in your learning space.
- Keep an emotion flashcard set nearby and check in with children before and after a challenge, so they start connecting feelings to moments, not just words. Click here to download our emotion cards.
- Celebrate the small stuff. A child sharing a marker or cheering on a friend’s tower deserves the same recognition as a finished project.
- Ask children to notice how their body feels after a kind moment. Warm, calm, and happy are all things a preschooler can point to, even before they have the words for it.
- Let children draw or color their feelings when words are not quite there yet.
