I live close enough to the Smoky Mountains that I get a front-row seat to one of the most stunning fall displays in the country every single year. The Smokies are the most visited national park in the United States, drawing over 12.5 million visitors annually, and a huge share of that traffic comes in the fall, when people travel from all over just to watch the leaves turn. It is easy to take that kind of beauty for granted when it is in your own backyard, but every fall it stops me in my tracks all over again.
Autumn has a rhythm to it. The light changes. The air cools. Squirrels start moving with more urgency. Children notice all of it, even if they do not have the words for it yet. This week’s theme, Autumn Adventures, gives children the STEAM tools to explore that rhythm hands-on.
