There is something about the first apple of fall that gets a whole learning space buzzing. The smell, the crunch, the way a single apple can turn into an entire afternoon of questions. This week’s Play Guide theme, Apple Explorers, is built to take that natural curiosity and turn it into real science, math, and engineering.
Why Apples Make Such Good STEAM Material
Apples are familiar, safe to explore with little hands, and full of things to notice. They float. They bruise. They can be stacked, weighed, cut, and coded into a game. For ages 3 to 6, that combination of familiar and full of surprises is exactly what invites deep, child-led exploration.
This Week’s Invitations
Let’s Investigate Apples Children get hands-on with real apples, noticing color, texture, weight, and what happens when an apple is cut open. It is the kind of open-ended sensory exploration that naturally leads to the biggest questions of the week.
Ten Apples Up On Top Inspired by the Dr. Seuss classic, this challenge invites children to test balance and stability using real materials. How many apples can stack before the tower topples? What changes when the apples are different sizes?
Apple Chute Challenge An engineering invitation where children design a path for an apple to travel down, then test, rebuild, and test again. It is a favorite for a reason. Watching a child problem-solve their way to a working chute is a small but powerful moment. This lesson is inside our member lab.
Farmer Annie Introduce young learners to explore a farmers’ market or apple orchard with this STEAM Storytime experience inspired by the book “Apple Annie Farmer.”

This week pairs with Ten Apples Up On Top by Dr. Seuss, a natural fit for the counting and stacking work happening in the lessons above.
