Water Play & STEAM: Simple Ways to Turn Splash Time into Learning

Water Play: A Fun & Easy Way to Teach STEAM. Water play is a favorite among preschoolers, and it’s also an incredible tool for teaching STEAM concepts. From simple science experiments to engineering challenges, water offers endless opportunities for exploration and discovery. Best of all, it’s easy to set up and naturally engages young learners.

Why Water Play is Great for STEAM Learning

Water is a dynamic and engaging material that allows children to explore cause and effect, physical properties, and problem-solving skills—all through play! Whether they are testing how objects float, creating water ramps, or experimenting with water pressure, preschoolers build foundational STEAM skills in a fun and interactive way.

3 Engaging Water Play STEAM Activities

1. Floating vs. Sinking Exploration

Why do some objects float while others sink? This simple activity encourages observation, prediction, and experimentation.

➡ Try this: Fill a bin with water and provide a mix of objects (toy boats, blocks, sponges, etc.). Have children guess which will float or sink before testing them! Encourage discussion: Why do some objects stay on top while others sink to the bottom?

2. DIY Water Races

Encourage engineering skills by experimenting with water flow and force.

➡ Try this: Set up a sloped ramp (using a plastic tray or gutter). Have children pour water and test how different objects travel down the ramp. What happens when they adjust the angle? What happens when they change the water speed?

3. Color Mixing with Water

STEAM learning meets art with this simple water experiment.

➡ Try this: Provide clear cups with primary-colored water. Let children mix them to create new colors and record their observations. Introduce questions like, What happens when we mix blue and yellow? Can we make purple?
