The Watermelon Seed: Float or Sink?

This week in our Summer STEAM Storytime Series we diving into the fascinating world of watermelons and discover the science behind floating and sinking. This hands-on STEAM activity for preschoolers will captivate young minds, foster curiosity, and provide a delightful way to introduce scientific concepts.

This activity is inspired by the fun picture book, “The Watermelon Seed,” by Greg Pizzoli. The story takes readers on a delightful adventure as the main character discovers the joys and fears of swallowing a watermelon seed. This entertaining story serves as the perfect starting point for our interactive science exploration.

The Science of Floating and Sinking:

Our STEAM activity centers around the concept of buoyancy, where objects either float or sink in water. Using watermelon as our scientific focus, we will investigate what factors determine whether a watermelon seed floats or sinks.

Through hands-on experiments, children will develop a deeper understanding of density, water displacement, and the principles behind floating and sinking.

As children engage in this STEM science experiment, encourage them to make predictions, discuss their observations, and share their findings.

Spark their scientific thinking by asking questions such as “Why do you think some seeds float while others sink?” and “Why do watermelon seed float or sinks?” These discussions promote critical thinking skills and foster a love for scientific inquiry.

Extend the learning by discussing other objects that float or sink and exploring real-life applications of buoyancy.

Encourage children to think about why certain objects float in water while others sink. Through play or outdoor water activities, children can continue to observe and experiment with floating and sinking objects.
