STEAM Challenge: Can you build the tallest Kapok tree?
Objective: Build the tallest tree inspired by the giant Kapok trees found in the rainforest.
Materials:
- “The Great Kapok Tree” written by Lynne Cherry
- Building Blocks
- Cardboard Tubes
- Wide Green Craft Sticks
- Tape Measure
Teaching Strategy:
Read the book, “The Great Kapok Tree”. Kapok trees can reach up to 200 feet high making them some of the tallest trees in the Amazon Rainforest.
Use the provided materials to build the tallest tree.
Measure how tall your tree is with a tape measure.
Guiding Questions:
- How tall is your tree? Can you redesign it to make it even taller?
- What animals live in a Kapok tree?
- Why are tall trees important in the rainforest?
