Create a collaborative paper quilt based inspired by the Dr. Seuss book, My Many Colored Days.
Step 1: Read the story and discuss how different colors make you feel.
Set up a painting area for children to explore different colors.
After having time experimenting and painting with different colors, give the students a new sheet of paper.
Have them pick a color that represents how they are feeling that day.
Let paintings dry.
Step 2: After the paintings have dried, cut up your painting into different shapes. Arrange and glue the shapes onto a piece of square construction paper.
Step 3: On a large sheet of banner paper or poster board mount every child’s square to create a paper quilt. Create a border around the squares to finish the paper quilt.
STEAM Integrations:
Science: How do different colors make us feel?
Technology: Research how real quilts are made.
Engineering: Bring in examples of real quilts (use quilts that are child-friendly and not a family heirloom). Let the children explore the textures of the quilt and challenge them to build a fort with the quilts.
Art: Paint and create a paper quilt.
Math: What shapes are used in your paper quilt? How many squares are in your quilt?
