5Did you know Whoville is the name of the fictional town in Horton Hears a Who! and How The Grinch Stole Christmas?
STEAM Challenge: Design and build Whoville.
Objective: Design and build a whimsical town inspired by Dr. Seuss’ Whoville.
Materials:
- Styrofoam Cup
- Paint
- Paint Brush
- Cardboard box
- Tape
- Paper
- Fun Craft Supplies (use what you have leftover from Day 4’s activity)
Step 1: Prep your cardboard box.
We used tape and paint to cover our cereal box and used it as the base for our Whoville.
Step 2: Build your Whoville house.
As I mentioned in the video, Dr. Seuss did not like to draw straight lines. Brainstorm what you can use to build a house with no straight lines! We decided to go with styrofoam cups.
Step 3: Paint your cups.
We used washable paint which will eventually flake off but for the activity, it worked out fine. If you wish the paint to be more permanent use acrylic paint.
Step 4: Add your details!
After the paint has dried use your craft supplies to design the fun shaped houses for the Whos.
Younger Child Modification: If you are working with younger children try letting them decorate their house with stickers.
Activity Extension: How can you build small people to represent the Whos?
We use a wooden peg, felt, tape and pipe cleaner to make ours.
STEAM Integrations:
Science: Compare Whoville to the town you live in. What is similar? What is different?
Technology: Research how a real house is built. What tools do builders use?
Engineering/Art: Build and design your own Whoville house.
Math: Measure the height of your Whoville house. Who has the tallest house? Who has the shortest?
