How to Help Preschoolers Think Like Scientists Through Play

Preschoolers are natural scientists. Every time they ask “Why?”, build a tower to see how high it can go, or mix paints to test what new color will appear, they are engaging in scientific thinking.

The good news? You don’t need complicated experiments or worksheets to help your little learners think like scientists. All it takes is play, curiosity, and the right questions.

Think like a scientist

The Simplified Scientific Method for Preschoolers

When we think of “the scientific method,” we often imagine lab coats and formal steps. But in preschool, it can be simple, playful, and developmentally appropriate.

Here’s a simplified version for young learners:

  1. Ask a Question – What do you wonder?
  2. Make a Guess – What do you think will happen?
  3. Try It Out – Let’s test it!
  4. Observe – What did you notice?
  5. Share – What did you find out?

You can post the poster below in your classroom and point to it when you’re exploring. It’s not about following the steps perfectly in order—it’s about showing children that their curiosity and ideas matter.

Teacher Talk: The Power of Questions

The most powerful tool you have is your language. Instead of jumping in with the answers, try pausing a

nd asking:“What do you notice?”

  • “What do you think will happen if…?”
  • “Why do you think that happened?”
  • “What else could we try?”

These simple prompts encourage children to observe, predict, and test ideas—just like scientists.

Model the Vocabulary

You don’t need to give preschoolers a dictionary definition of “hypothesis.” Simply model the words in context.

  • “You made a prediction about what would happen.”
  • “Let’s observe closely. What do you see?”
  • “That’s a great experiment—you tried something new to see what would happen.”
  • “Look what you discovered today!”

Hearing these words naturally helps children begin to see themselves as scientists.

Keep It Playful

Helping preschoolers think like scientists doesn’t mean adding more to your plate. It’s about shifting how you approach play. Whether you’re sorting buttons, testing what rolls down a ramp, or building with blocks, you can weave in questions and vocabulary that spark scientific thinking.

Because when children learn to think like scientists, they don’t just gain knowledge—they gain confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning.
