Halloween is full of magic, and what better way to capture the spooky spirit than by creating bubbling witch’s potions?
This potion-making activity is a fun, hands-on way for preschoolers to explore science and math while using their imaginations.
Using our Play-Based STEAM System—Prep, Play, and Guide—you’ll set up an environment where kids can explore potion-making, experiment with ingredients, and learn about chemical reactions.
Step 1: Play Prep – Setting Up the Potion Station
To get started, set up a Potion-Making Station where children can freely explore mixing different ingredients. Here’s how to prep the environment:
Materials:
- Plastic cauldrons or bowls
- Baking soda
- Vinegar
- Food coloring (in small containers of water)
- Droppers, spoons, and small measuring cups
- Fun Halloween props like plastic spiders, eyeballs, or skeletons
Spark Wonder:
- Set up a table with the ingredients neatly arranged, and place Halloween-themed decorations around to spark their imaginations.
- Optional: Play spooky music in the background to set the mood
Step 2: Play Magic: Observe How They Play and Experiment
Once the environment is ready, invite the children to explore on their own. Watch how they interact with the potion ingredients.
- Do they mix carefully or pour with excitement?
- Are they fascinated by the color changes or more intrigued by the bubbling reaction when vinegar is added to baking soda?
- Are they counting or measuring ingredients as they play?
Let them discover the magic of the bubbling potion without interruption, and observe their natural curiosity at work.
Step 3: 5-Star Guide – Introduce the Science of Potions
After some free play, step in to guide the children’s learning. This is where you can help them understand the science behind the bubbling potion.
Extend the Learning:
- Ask: “What happens when we add more vinegar? Why do you think it bubbles?”
- Guide: Encourage them to measure ingredients—”Let’s try using 2 teaspoons of baking soda and see what happens.” Introduce simple math and measurement by comparing amounts.
- Explore Color Mixing: If they’re excited by the color changes, introduce color mixing: “What happens if we mix red and blue water together?”
By guiding their exploration, you’ll turn play into a hands-on science experiment where they can learn about chemical reactions, measurement, and color mixing.
Potion-making is a perfect way to bring the magic of Halloween into your preschooler’s STEAM learning. With a few simple ingredients, kids can explore chemical reactions and measurements in a fun, playful way.
